Apple Health and Health Connect

Since the eSense App 8.x, you can transfer selected readings from your eSense sensors to the health ecosystems on your smartphone: on iOS to Apple Health and on Android to Health Connect by Android. This way, your biofeedback values are available in one place together with your other wellness data.

The transfer takes place only at your explicit request and after you have granted the relevant permissions. The values are stored as biofeedback and wellness data; they are not intended for medical diagnosis or monitoring.

Which values are supported?

Not every reading can be stored on every platform, because the two ecosystems offer different data types. The following overview shows which sensor can be exported where:

SensorApple Health (iOS)Health Connect (Android)
eSense PulseYes – heart rateYes – heart rate
eSense TemperatureYes – body temperatureYes – body temperature
eSense RespirationYes – respiratory rateYes – respiratory rate
eSense Skin Response (EDA)Yes – electrodermal activityNo
eSense Muscle (EMG)NoNo

Note on Skin Response (EDA): Health Connect currently has no data type for electrodermal activity. Data from the eSense Skin Response is therefore not exported on Android, but remains available exclusively within the eSense App. On iOS, it is stored as electrodermal activity in Apple Health.

Note on Muscle (EMG): For raw muscle tension data, there is no suitable data type in either Apple Health or Health Connect. Measurements from the eSense Muscle therefore remain stored exclusively within the eSense App on both platforms.

Enabling the export

  1. Open the settings of the eSense App.
  2. There, enable the export to Apple Health (iOS) or to Health Connect (Android).
  3. In the dialog that follows, confirm the permissions for the values you would like to transfer (e.g. heart rate, body temperature, respiratory rate and – on iOS – electrodermal activity).
  4. After completing a training, the supported values of the respective measurement are written to the chosen health ecosystem.

You can adjust or revoke the granted permissions at any time in the settings of Apple Health or Health Connect. If a permission is revoked, the eSense App no longer transfers the values concerned.

Frequently asked questions

Why don’t my Skin Response values appear in Health Connect on Android?
Because Health Connect does not provide a data type for electrodermal activity. These values remain available in the eSense App.

Can I export measurements that are already saved afterwards?
The export applies to measurements that are recorded after enabling the function and granting the permissions.
